Editing Music Notation — About MusicXML

About MusicXML

Lessonator™ can load MusicXML files and associate them to a slide. The MusicXML file is converted to an internal file format that is optimized for Lessonator™.

MusicXML is an XML-based file format for representing Western musical notation. The format is proprietary, but fully and openly documented, and can be freely used under a Public License. As of 2013, MusicXML is supported to varying degrees by over 160 notation programs. These programs include: Most scorewriting programs, including Finale, Sibelius, capella, and MuseScore.

  • Most Music OCR programs, including SmartScore and PhotoScore.

  • Some music sequencer programs, including Cubase, SONAR, and Rosegarden.

  • Additionally, web support is possible through the use of the HTML5 canvas element and JavaScript resulting in the rendering of legible music within a web browser.

Note that no application supports MusicXML 100%, like no web site uses 100% of the features of HTML4. Each application is written differently and furthermore there are regional and domain-specific differences in music notation conventions.
